Robert Morgan (played by Daniel Gerroll) is the father of Henry Morgan. He owned a major shipping company called Morgan Shipping Company that was very prevalent at the time in England and the west Indies.

Background[]

Henry first learns from friends in 1812 that his father's shipping business has been transporting slaves. He confronts his father about it. His father explains the Morgan Shipping Company business went sour and Morgan was forced to mortgage all of the company's property as well as the Morgan family estate. Being unable to continue to pay off the loans, Morgan resorted to engaging in the slave trade to make enough money to not lose everything.

In 1814 Morgan, who has taken ill again and is on his deathbed, asks to see Henry. He says he wasn't sure Henry would come, he'd heard Henry was moving to the colonies; Henry confirms that his ship leaves in three weeks, and he plans for Nora to join him in the spring. Henry's father wants to give him something, but Henry says that whatever it is, he can't accept it (as it would be from profits from the slave trade). His father offers him his pocket watch, explaining that it was given to him by his own father, who got it from his. Henry takes the watch, and his father tells him he's proud to have raised a son who is a better man than he is. He dies before a tearful Henry finds the words to reply.
