I don't get it, Henry. A man would have to have lived ten lives to have picked up what you have.
— Jo to Henry
in "The King of Columbus Circle"

Jo Martinez is a main character and a detective with the New York Police Department.[1]

Biography[]

Detective Jo Martinez is a New York City native and one of the youngest officers of the New York Police Department to make homicide detective. She has been working as police officer for at least ten years.[2] Jo's sharp, no-nonsense instincts and her ability to close difficult cases have given her a tough-as-nails reputation on the force, despite also dealing with the untimely loss of her husband.

Jo was married to Sean Moore, a prosecutor in the New York court system. Sean was in Washington to give a deposition, went for a run on the hotel treadmill, and died of a heart attack. Jo took the loss hard, turning to drinking and casual sex to fill the void. She wore her wedding band on a necklace chain and would often fiddle with it, especially when thinking of Sean. Jo later revealed to Henry that the day before Sean left on the fatal trip, they'd had a huge fight, and Jo left early the next day so she wouldn't have to apologize, so "the last words I said to my husband were in anger." When Jo first met Henry, it had been less than a year since her husband's death.

Working with Dr. Henry Morgan was initially a challenge for Jo, but over time the investigator has come to appreciate Henry's annoyingly "creative approach" to solving homicides. Combined with Jo's quick-fire cop instincts, Henry's deductive talents have not only contributed to a successful partnership, but also to a budding friendship.

She's very devoted to Henry, she covers for him a lot in front of their boss and never says a thing about his suicidal instincts.

It's possible she has suspicions about his immortality as he drops a lot of clues on her and in the Pilot, she indeed saw him get shot and then grapple a would-be mass murderer off the roof of Grand Centeal Station, but since she was only half conscious after getting shot herself, she has reason to doubt her senses.

Jo is from Harlem [3]. Her father Victor Martinez Jr was a criminal[4], he went to trial and is serving his time in prison[5]. It is unknown what exact crime he is currently incarcerated for, but he taught Jo how to pick locks at an early age. Jo's brother never believed their father guilty, even after his conviction, and this has caused a rift with Jo, who is certain of his guilt. Jo wanted to be the opposite of her father.

In "Dead Men Tell Long Tales", Jo and Isaac Monroe went out on a date.

In "Best foot Forward", Jo clearly demonstrated the fact she has developed (romantic) feelings for Henry as she skipped a trip to Paris with Isaac because she realized she didn't want to go with Isaac, heavily implying she did want to go with Henry..

In Twitter's Q&A, Matt Miller mentioned that Jo was going to find out about Henry's immortality during season 2 and would accept him and their romantic relationship would develop from there. He has mentioned that they would end season 2 heading off to Paris together.
